Light

Light is beautiful. A good fall fire dances after dusk. Christmas lights twinkle in the evening.

Light draws us in. My daughter’s lava lamp mesmerizes us in dim light. The sun from an early age is a magnet to young eyes. ”Don’t look directly at it” - a warning most parents heed to young children almost daily.

Light is comforting to children afraid of the dark and helpful to adults as they find their way in an unfamiliar part of town. It signifies hope for the adventurous when spelunking and rays of sunlight beckon us to the floor as we slink about as cats to find our napping post.

Movies, books, and any good story have an element of darkness and the the victory of the righteous, good, light. We all feel better when Light prevails. Few people dislike light and yet we’re addicted to darkness.

Scandal, gossip, airing another’s dirty laundry always seems to draw a crowd. The tension is present in all of us, yet most don’t see the hypocrisy. Darkness is a reality, but it doesn’t have to be the accepted norm. Where is the outrage, disgust, the refusal to casually follow what’s normal? It’s easier to see the Light when surrounded by darkness but we must stop embracing the dark. May Jesus help us see it as a tool to direct us towards the Light.

Jesus is the Light of the world. (John 8:12) Eyes give light to our bodies. (Matthew 6:22) God is known as Father of Lights. (James 1:17) Sin loses its power over us when brought into light. (Ephesians 5:8-14) Light is powerful, comforting, and brings about freedom from the sick, mislead appetite of darkness. Do you feel it? Do you know it? It’s available to anyone who embraces Jesus.

“Arise, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.” -Ephesians 5:14b
